The SwiftGate™ System on the A-13

The SwiftGate™ system has been in operation on the A-13 since 1992. Originally, the automated lane closure system was developed to facilitate the execution of a contract that required the left lane of a highway to be closed for short periods of time. Difficulties encountered were as follows:

•Temporary left lane closure four times daily
•(2:00AM, 10:00AM, 2:45PM and 7:35PM)
•Geometric concerns (sharp curves)
•Heavy commuter traffic corridor
•Main artery (High traffic volume and speed (60 mph [100 km/hr])
•Potentially long set up time for lane closure with a relatively short closure time

 

Since 1992 the system has been in constant evolution. In 2007, after having successfully completed the NCHRP 350 crash test and receiving FHWA approval, the latest version of the system was installed. It took a crew of 3 people 3 hours to install the 15 modules.

The system has been working flawlessly since, functioning under the most adverse of atmospheric and environmental conditions such as snow, freezing rain, corrosive de-icing agents, low light and high winds.
